NABCO Educate Ghana: 21% of Applicants to be employed for Double Track System

The 21% represents the 9,000 teachers to be employed out of the 43,000 who applied. However, Educate Ghana applicants will not be for just the double track system.

The Education Ministry has stated that the recruits enrolled on government’s Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) programme will serve as a pool to recruit new teachers to feed the double track system.

Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Ekow Vincent Assafuah made the revelation, Monday, assuring, there will be no hurdles to recruit new teachers before the new academic year begins in September.

“About 43,000 teachers registered for the NABCO programme so there’s no difficulty to get new recruits for the double track policy,” Mr Assafuah told Roland Walker on the AM Show on the Joy News channel on Multi TV Monday.

The double track policy is being introduced by the government to serve as a solution to the overcrowding that the Senior High Schools suffered when the Free SHS policy was introduced in September 2017.

The double year-round system divides the entire student body and staff into two different tracks. So while one track is in school, the other is on vacation.

The former National Service Personnel (NASPA) President added that although the ministry is yet to begin the recruitment process, it intends to “start this week or next week”.

“About 9,000 new teachers will be recruited,” he said.

He also clarified that all the new teachers would not be placed on the same track. “We will have a blend,” he stated.

Speaking on the qualification of these new teachers, Mr Assafuah noted that the minimum qualification the ministry would be looking at is that each recruit must be a trained teacher.

“They should have had training in the Colleges of Education,” he said.

Mr Assafuah also reiterated a point made by the Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee Steven Siaka that not all schools would run the double track system.

Although he could not state outright which schools would be running the system, he explained that only the schools that has been oversubscribed by the new entrants will run the system.

Some of the schools like Achimota School that have a lot of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates subscribing to go there would run the system due to the overwhelming numbers.
