WAEC to Begin Marking BECE and WASSCE Scripts on Monday, October 9 2023
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its plans to kickstart the marking of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scripts starting from Monday, October 9, 2023. This declaration comes amidst the lingering issue of delayed government funding which had initially impeded this crucial phase of the examination process.
John Kapi, the Head of Public Relations at WAEC, made this known recently. He mentioned that the team of markers convened on October 4, 2023, to acquaint themselves with the marking scheme. They are scheduled to conclude the coordination phase by Friday, October 6, and initiate the actual marking process on the following Monday, 9th October 2023.
However, Kapi expressed concerns regarding the completion of the marking process, attributing it to the pending release of funds by the government. The delay in funding has not only stalled the marking process but also posed a threat to the timely release of results.
In a recent development, on October 5, there was a hint at the possibility of halting the marking process altogether if the necessary funds aren’t disbursed. Nonetheless, the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, reassured WAEC officials that the required funds would be made available, alleviating concerns around the marking and subsequent release of the examination results.
