For instance, if you go to the Central Business District of Accra, you will agree with me that almost 40% of the business buildings are made of glass and wood.

But the question many people might ask is that what wood is preferably good for building in Ghana? After consulting and asking the experts in the field, the answer I got was plywood.

The reason behind this is that plywood is relatively cheap and durable as compared to the other types of wood that are used for construction. If you will agree with me, over 50% of the trap doors in Ghana are made from plywood.

What Is A Plywood?

Plywood is a type of strong thin wooden board consisting of two or more layers glued and pressed together with the direction of the grain alternating. Plywood is formed from an odd number of veneer sheets.

Due to the different uses of plywood in Ghana, plywood is produced in different qualities. As a result, the quality of plywood mostly depends on the gluing or the number of veneer layers.

Meaning, the more layers your plywood has, the stronger it will be. For example, plywood with four (4) layers will be stronger than that with five (5) layers.

Types of Plywood

Softwood

This is the type of plywood that is manufactured by using softwoods, like pine, redwood, or cedar. Some of the examples of softwood plywood are Cedar plywood, Redwood plywood, and Pine plywood.

The name of this type of plywood might sound like this plywood is not strong but it is. Mostly, they are used for roof sheathing, sheds, temporary flooring, doghouses, and more.

Hardwood

Hardwood plywood typically has between three and seven layers and uses hardwood. The layers of wood are glued at 90 degrees to one another to create an incredibly strong finish.

Some of the examples of hardwood plywood are Birch plywood, Oak plywood, Maple plywood, Walnut plywood, Poplar plywood. They are mostly used for the manufacture of things like furniture, packing cases, musical instruments.

Aircraft Plywood

Aircraft plywood is one of the highest-grade plywood in the world. This type of plywood is made from hardwoods like mahogany or birch, to make an incredibly strong finished piece that resists heat and moisture.

Just as the name suggests, this type of plywood is used for projects that need high-strength woods, like airplanes, furniture, boats, and other projects that are meant to hold a lot of weight.

Exterior Plywood

Exterior plywood has weather and water-resistant glue that holds each veneer together. This is because an exterior plywood stands severe weather conditions like rain, and sun, and as such needs to be able to withstand these weather conditions.

Lumber Plywood

This type of plywood is made with three plies, with two (2) thin veneers on each side and a thick core. The outer veneers are made of a hardwood and the inner core is made from strips of wood glued into a hard slab.
