There are over a thousand hospitals in Ghana. Some of these hospitals are known to be public hospitals, for example, Greater Accra Regional Hospital (RIDGE); and some are known to be private hospitals, for example Champion Divine Clinic.

If we were to write a list of all the hospitals that accept NHIS in Ghana, we would have had to write a whole book about that. But to save ourselves the stress of going through that, I am going to show you the categories of hospitals that accept NHIS.

The categories are as follows:

  • Community – based Health Planning and Service (popularly known as CHPS compound)
  • All public hospitals – for example Achimota Hospital
  • District Hospitals – for example, Adansi Fomena District Hospital
  • Regional/Teaching Hospitals – for example, Greater Accra Regional Hospital (RIDGE), Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals, etc.

In addition to this, some private hospitals accept NHIS. To know whether the private hospital you are visiting accept NHIS, ask the administrator or the person in charge before you go.
