How to prepare tilapia light soup

Tilapia soup is a soup that is usually enjoyed when hot and spicy. It is mostly paired with fufu for lunch, but can be taken with a few other foods as well. How to prepare tilapia light soup


  • 2 or 3 large tilapia
  • 3 riped garden eggs
  • 1 tablespoon turkey berries
  • 3 Fresh Tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons Tomato paste
  • 2 medium Onions
  • 5-7 scotch bonnet pepper or green chilli
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1-2 cloves garlic
  • Grounded shrimp powder(optional)
  • Salt and seasonings


  1. Place garden eggs, turkey berries,1 onion, and scotch bonnet pepper in a saucepan.
  2. Add water and bring to a boil under medium heat until the garden eggs is cooked and soft.
  3. Descale the Tilapia by cutting the fish open to remove the internal organs and scraping all the sides.
  4. Wash and add to a cooking pot. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt over the fish and toss it so that it coat all around. Leave it to marinate for 5 minutes.
  5. Blend ginger, garlic and onion using a moderate amount of water until smooth. Pour over fish.
  6. Add seasonings. Add fresh tomatoes
  7. Place cooking pot on medium heat and boil fish for about 5 minutes. Add tomato paste. Allow fish to simmer for about 5 minutes.
  8. Blend cooked garden eggs, cooked fresh tomatoes and the other ingredients with moderate water until smooth.
  9. Strain using a colander or sieve into a bowl OR pour it directly into the cooking pot.
  10. Add a moderate amount of water to the mixture. Allow it to cook for about 20 minutes. Add grounded shrimp. Adjust salt.
  11. When the soup thickens and oil starts to form on top, then soup is ready to be consume.
  12. Serve the soup with your favorite accompaniment either fufu, boiled ripe plantains or fluffy boiled rice.
  13. Avoid turning fish frequently to prevent breakage.
  14. You can opt to strain your blender ingredients or not. Some people love to have all the fiber inclusive in the soup.

How to know when tilapia is done cooking

The best way to tell if your fish is done is by testing it with a fork at an angle, at the thickest point, and twist gently. The fish will flake easily when it’s done and it will lose its translucent or raw appearance. A good rule of thumb is to cook the fish to an internal temperature of 140-145 degrees.
